Pyjama Day in Room 1

On the last day of school we held a Pyjama Day at Vardon School to support HOPE. It is an organisation that supports children who are put into foster care. The kind children in Room 1 brought along old books, toys, pyjamas and school bags to help foster children. Thank you Room 1!

Swimsafe Week 6 Terrm 3

We had the most amazing Swimsafe Week at the Te Rapa pools where we honed our skills in swimming and water safety. The children wrote thank you letters to parents who supported us and all the children voted the deep water challenge as being their favourite part. Mrs Jones was so proud of us.... everyone gave it a go! Go Room!

Our wonderful assembly Week 8 Term 3

Yes... it was a busy term but we finished it in grand style! with the help of Bryoney and Mrs Jones we put together all our learning in a entertaining way to present to the school and our parents. Mrs Paton thanked us for our hard work and we needed to thank our wonderful parents who have supported our class through Swimsafe, planting and our learning.

Planting with Room 2 at Fonterra Farm

On Monday the 19th September, Vardon School, in conjunction with our Enviroschools partner Fonterra and, Pukete School planted 1000 plants in less than 2hours !
Well done Team!
It was a slippery, soggy adventure but the smiles and good humour were out in force. Mrs Scott and Mrs Jones joined us in our adventure and lots a great parents helped us too.
First we were loaded onto the bus for the drive to the Te Rapa Fonterra Demonstration Farm where we were joined by Pukete School and our Enviroschools partners.
Next we listened to the safety guidelines, had a demonstration on planting then we started the trek to the stream to plant our plants. Then we divided into groups and started the task of planting.
Spades dug into the crust of the earth and plants were liberated from their small bags into the earth. Children chattered and giggled with our Fonterra helpers. Everyone had a most enjoyable time. Eventually the plants were all planted and we made our weary way back to the top of the rise for a break.
Our hosts treated us to an up close encounter with a milk tanker and the baby calves, frolicking in the paddocks next to the milk shed. Later on we cheerfully chomped the tastiest sausages ever!
Thank you to all our marvellous parents, teachers, envirokids from Room 1 and Room 2 but most importantly our Enviroschools facilitator Adrienne and Fonterra.
We learnt how important plants are in protecting our rivers and streams. The roots of our native plants filter (or cleanse) the water from the phosphates used to grow the grass in the paddocks. This helps our fish, insects and plant life remain healthy in our waterways.
We will be back next year to check on the growth of our plants and to add to those already planted.

Shaydens Glasses

 Looking good, Shayden!

Every one has been very excited to see Shayden's new glasses so.... we hope these super duper glasses will help him rocket away in reading!

Flat Stanley

In Room 1 we have read the book Flat Stanley and we have made our very own Flat Stanley in

class and then... we created a Flat KC who travels all sorts of places with us and others. We write about his adventures and look forward to seeing where he will pop up!

Poetry Week

We had great fun writing poems for Poetry Week. Here are some of our wonderful poems from the class.

Winter

Winter feels like freezing wind nibbling at my nose,
Winter looks like skeleton trees,
Winter sounds like the sea swishing at the beach,
Winter tastes like freezing ice-cream in my mouth.
I love winter!

Winter

The wind smashes on my face like the sea,
Freezing my fingers like icicles,
The wind sounds like singing birds,

The trees look like big, fat skeletons.

Winter freezes the trees and they look like skeletons,
Winter feels cold on my face.

The sandman is coming !!

When we hear that the Sandman is coming we think it is bedtime but.... oh! no! At avrdon School we have a new sandpit to play in thanks to the PTA and the Board. Thank you everyone, we know how much our future engineers in Room1 will love the extra space.
We all went out to watch the sand truck deliver the sand to make our fun complete.

Aliens visit Vardon School

A strange thing happened at Vardon School today!
Mr Peachey arrived to find the library in blackness and chaos! All our library books were gone and there was no clue as to where! Mr Peachey mumbled something about aliens and space ships.... Mrs Jones was not sure about that!
Later when we had a gone to have a meeting about the weird happenings today, Mrs Ferraby came rushing into Room 2 with a note from the aliens...... they were very sorry but they knew nothing about books. They thought they were getting cookies! They returned our books but left us wondering how to explain what books were and how important they were to us and how they grow what we know about our world.

Mr Peachey like we have never seen him before, after the alien invasion !
The evidence of invasion.... alien handprints on the blackened doors of the library!
It was all too much for Mr Peachey and he had to visit the sick bay at Vardon School.

Waikato River Walk

This term we have been learning about why it is so important to keep our rivers and drains free of rubbish and chemicals. We have become Teenage Mutant Drain Turtles in our quest to find answers to our investigation. Part of our inquiry required that we take account of the rubbish we create as humans......what we discovered was WASTE is a human invention!
We are the cause of waste and we create pollution...of our land, waterways and air!
As part of our inquiry and to try to repair the damage our class, along with Room 2 and 3 visited the Waikato River with parents to clean up the waste (rubbish).

ONLY water goes DOWN the drain!

Tabloid Sports Day

We have been having fun demonstrating our ability to work together as a team. Tabloid Sports days are always so much fun and we have lots of giggles on the way!
Whaea Nikki is teaching us while Mrs Jones is on leave. Thank you Whaea Nikki.

Its swimming time again!

It is swimming time again and our class has been taking advantage of the lovely weather and the pool to practice our swimming skills and learn lots of new skills. We are learning how to be safe in the water and how to keep ourselves afloat!
Thank you to Bryoney who has joined us and shared her swimming coaching skills!
We are looking forward to showing all the parents just how clever we are at the Swimming demonstration.

Thank you for the care you took of our potatoes!

A HUGE thank you to the parents who ensured the potatoes we planted in December made it through to the new year.
As you can see they are still thriving and we look forward to bringing them to harvest in early autumn. Then we will enjoy some yummy potato bread and treats.

Welcome to Room 1 2016

A very warm welcome to Room 1 for 2016
We have some new faces in our room and I look forward to meeting all the new children and parents to our room. We have a great year head of learning and sharing our knowledge.
There will be a meet and greet evening in February and you are all welcome to come and share kai, company and get to know the faces in Room 1.
