Cross Country Day

Well.... after some technical issues we now have a photo of the amazing Bella. It is blurry because she moves super fast!
Although Cross country was a long time ago it was great fun and the children really loved it so here you are!
The children in Room 1 had been practising hard for the annual school cross country. We have learnt how to warm up, cool down and have talked about strategies that will help us achieve our goals.
All those hopes and dreams come to light on the big day. We had a lot of fun competing and some stars shone on the day. Bella was outstanding, leading the field by a furlong!
Well done!

Hello to Linkin

We are sending our love and thoughts to Linkin who is resting at home after surgery. We are sending plenty of books to keep you busy. Get well soon and we look forward to seeing you again at school soon.

Teddy Bears Picnic and Pyjama day

If you down to Room 1 at  Vardon School you better go in disguise ..... for every bear that ever there was will gather there for certain because ... Today's the day the Teddy bears have there picnic.
On Thursday we had a teddy bears picnic and Brown Bear Barney came along.... he can be quite naughty at school and soon had all our teddies having great fun with their owners.
We measured our bears, read to our bears, eat with our bears and wrote about our bears.
Our bears were very tired at the end and when Brown Bear Barney woke up on Friday morning he was wondering what happened to all his friends... where had they gone!
That is what happens to sleepy heads!

Balloon fun

The photos have just been released from the i-pod!
Look at the great fun we had in August! It was too wet to have sack soccer outside so Mrs Jones and the other teachers in the Year 2 team quickly devised a sneaky plan to get us motivated for writing.
We all meet in the hall for some balloon fun. It was hilarious!
Balloons were popping like guns as we had to pass them between people and duck under and over hoops. They were squashy and slippery and slid everywhere!

Cool Crowns

In Room 1 we have been exploring Patterns and Relationships for numeracy. To show our teacher how much we know about this she got us to make crowns and we were Princes and Princesses for the day!
Maths was never so cool!

Production!

After many weeks of practise and a huge effort from everyone the night finally arrived.
It was full of colour, costumes, culture and clapping. Room 1 children were scattered amongst the many cultures that performed.
It was a dazzling experience which featured many star performances. Well done to everyone that was involved!
Here are some of our very cool Tongan dancers and Samoan drummers.

Below is the link to the u-tube video of the entire performance!

Dafffodil Day at Vardon School

Things looked a bit different in Room 1 at Vardon School on Daffodil Day. Children arrived to find yellow and red balloons being blown up.
The students in Room 1 wanted to 'give a bit' for people who are afflicted with cancer so... they huffed and they puffed there way to producing some springtime smiles for others.
After the roll, we sneaked outside as quiet as mice to decorate the school and then we conned a few seniors into helping us paint faces in the morning tea break.
There were a lot of happy smiles when they had finished.

Things did look different at school today, and the writing was marvellous!

Wacky Hair Day

Have aliens arrived at Vardon School? Am I seeing things?
My lovely class has certainly changed their hair styles but this is all in a good cause, raising money for charity....
Well done Room 1

Spring has arrived!

Yes! Spring is here.
Ererangi has brought us some beautiful daffodils for Room 1.
The daphne in the garden by the office door is flowering and each morning I catch a sniff of its perfume as it wafts in the air.
See if you can find the meaning to the interesting words I used in the post... my dictionary wizards!

Room1 has a craft box to be proud of

Thanks to the Gilmour family and the Light family for cleaning out your cupboards and finding us some unwanted treasures!
They will be put to very good use on these wet lunchtimes!

Remember one man's junk is another man's treasure... we are into recycling in Room1

The water cycle goes round and round....

Yes, it does!
The water cycle is forever active on our planet ( Earth)  bringing and supporting life to plants, mammals, fish, reptiles and humans.
We all need it to survive!
That is why it is so important to us.
Here are some of the diaorama's we made to show our learning!
Ask us about the fog, clouds, rain, snow, hail, puddles, lakes, rivers and oceans and we can tell you how they are made!

It's all about the water!
A special thanks to Lincoln's Mum who made us the awesome play dough which we used very creatively!

Water, water everywhere!

The rain has certainly arrived and with it we have begun to think about how rain is made, how clouds are formed and why our earth is made up of over 70% of water!
We have begun inquiring into the water cycle and have even explored some awesome experiments to justify our conclusions.

As part of that inquiry you have probably found yourself singing this catchy tune ....

Enjoy!

Wahoo! We got to share our learning with the whole school.

Yes... the wonderful learners in Room 1 worked really hard to share our learning with the whole school.
We shared poems, a power point, song, dance and even some food in the staffroom with the school and our parents. Thank you Mrs Paton for joining us to celebrate our learning!

Our wondeful writing

Room 1 has a wall of wonderful poems about Autumn leaves. We wrote these using our senses after we had explored the leaves around the school and watched, listened, smelt and felt them.

Here is some of the great writing we achieved!

Anzac Day - Why is it so special to New Zealanders?

In Room 1 we have been learning about the special place ANZAC day has in our lives 100 years on.
We learnt that a lot of our great grandads and great grandmas watched as their fathers went away to a war on the other side of the world. many didn't come home again. Thank you to all our families that helped us uncover some wonderful family history.
View our learning here!

We found out about the story of the Poppy and why it has become the symbol of the Anzacs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8Jv0T9eFUY

We used the iconic symbol of Anzac Day a poppy to recreate a tribute to our soldiers. We learnt to add layers of paint to create depth and to add an outline to make an image bold.

Here are some examples of what we created... for more come into Room 1 for a viewing!

Look what Ererangi found for us!

Ererangi and her grandmother found this wonderful birds nest for us to investigate at news time! We had lots of discussion about what to do if you find a birds nest and what they are made of. Thank you for bringing this in Ererangi!

Our Class Photo

Today Mrs Gribben helped us take a class photo so we could put it in our classroom and on the blog. Gee, the sun got in all our eyes!

Monarch Butterflies come to School

Today Bella brought a Monarch Butterfly to school to share with the class. Her Nana held it while we took a photo. It's feet tickled our palms as it walked across it.

Relationships

Since we were all new to Room 1. We created an amazing web of relationships to learn everyone's name.

You can see how much fun it was!

We got very entangled in the activity.

Thank you to all the lovely Mums and Dads for the warm welcome to Vardon School. I was delighted to meet you all and your lovely children.
On this blog you can access notices by clicking the bar at the top to download these. I will put all trip notices and classroom notices here to assist with the gremlins who invade schoolbags between home and school and eat notices, apparently!
By clicking on the Maths, Reading and Writing or Just for Fun pages on the bar above you can access all the learning sites that we use in class.
These sites are selected to be safe sites for your child to use and although they are online they have been selected for their educational benefit to learning.
Should you encounter any problems please alert me immediately so I can recheck them and eliminate them, if necessary.
I will add the Essential Spelling Lists to supplement the school spelling programme. You can download this lists for your child to practice their spelling. These spelling lists represent 50% of the words we use to write so it is a great advantage to children to learn these to develop writing fluency (the ability to write with ease).
To comment on this blog , click on the pencil icon and your positive comment about your childs' effort and learning will be added after being filtered by the administrator.
Happy blogging Room One cybercitizens.
Mrs Jones.
